Shared my experience on “Women of DevC Kathmandu” event organised by Facebook Developer Circle Kathmandu held on 16th Nov 2019. It was amazing experience sharing struggle and achievements. Here I will put my experience again so that someone around the globe might get benefit from this article.
Your FOCUS will be change if you are planning to switch career from Engineering to Management. When you are working as an Software Engineer, you are responsible for technology – how to make your product best in the market whereas when you are working as manager then you are responsible for people – making team that can build valuable product.
I started with sharing, why professionals scare for the career transition, why people make excuses or actually those are just myths. Sometimes we thought transitions would be difficult, managing extra time or money would be inconvenient. we make our own assumptions about if I don’t know right set of people if I am not applying with proper reference then that job is not mine. At the same time as a women we want perfection everywhere, and we scared to apply for the position if we don’t matches 80-90% of our expertise whereas men apply for the same job without hesitation if only 50% of criteria matches. See where we are lagging, it’s our mindset, we are not letting ourselves to come out of comfort zone. we always scruple for the negotiation of numbers for paycheck. Along with these excuses we have others in our mind like “What if I fail?”, for this believe in yourself. and once you are in the greater position then your friend or if you are their boss now then don’t expect the same behaviour as earlier, it is definitely going to be change.
Observing how Manager works within your team is most important if you are planning to switch so that you can start making list of good and bad things that you want to adopt and not repeat. Having a solid engineering and technology background helped me move into a management role with greater confidence. Asking for frequent feedback made me a more aware of how others see me and motivated me to change for the better.
Expand your Vision by looking external for solutions and thinking outside the box. you have to be a good communicator within team and of course your dressup also matter as the position demands for that too 😉
Great power comes with great responsibilities, as you are thinking of switching then you should be ready to give your performance as position’s demand. Remember: Each step/ladder you climb, equally amount of performance is required for that level. Try to do some certifications needed for the role as well. those might not be the necessity for now but trust me in future those certifications will definitely add value to your career growth.
Here are some list of habits you need to change, if you are planning to switch as manager.
- Your friendship with your teammates will suffer once you’re their boss.
- Desire to do everything yourself is not helpful
- Desire to be the know-it-all. – need to change
- Working alone – need to change
- Caring only about your part of the work will not work.
- Improving the ability to learn and adapt new things
- Accepting that you will be wrong.
- You should care about small things
My favorite part of being manager is meeting a lot of interesting people. Basically it will boost your professional network, along with this you have influence on the direction of the company too. 🙂
